It seems that activity in the smaller crater in the volcanic eruption at Sundhnúkagígar crater row is fading out and the larger crater is taking over.

This is similar to the development of the southernmost crater that burned out a few days ago, according to Salóme Jórunn Bernharðsdóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office.

The activity of the eruption has not changed since yesterday, however.

Doesn't seem to pose a threat to defense walls

The area was observed from a helicopter yesterday and part of the lava flowed eastwards, but most of it went the usual route south from the crater. The lava does not appear to threaten the defense walls and is not on the way to Suðurstrandarvegur road for now, Bernharðsdóttir said.

There was a small amount of sulfur pollution last night, but it was measured at Nesvegur road Wednesday night. Based on the gas distribution forecast, it is likely that the wind will turn and the gas will move northwards today. It could pass over Suðurnes tonight.
