Stunning new images of the eruption

"It's a very massive eruption an although we have started to notice some changes in it, activity is still very intense," explained volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson at the University of Iceland Earth Science Institute to Morgunblaðið news.

Last week scientists observed fluctuations in the volcanic plume with powerful jets being emitted sporadically. They also noted pulsing in the lava flow.

The intensity of the eruption has declined and the lava flow is now a quarter of what it was when the eruption was at its most intense stage. Now 60-100 cubic meters (2,119-3,532 cubic feet) of lava are currently being emitted every second. The new lava field, which has been named Nornahraun, or "witches lava", now spans seventy four square kilometres.

Morgunblaðið photographer Ragnar Axelsson flew over the eruption at Holuhraun yesterday, November 26th and captured these stunning images.
